style insider – Dr. Sophie Shotter

For our first ever ‘Style Insider’ feature, we caught up with the lovely Dr. Sophie Shotter, founder and owner of the award-winning Illuminate Skin Clinic in Kings Hill. Read on to find out about the passionate cosmetic doctors top skincare tips for summer, her favourite SS15 trends and what she’s looking forward to for AW15.

You’re the founder of Illuminate Skin Clinic…tell us a bit about it?

I’m a cosmetic doctor, and Illuminate Skin Clinic is a cosmetic medicine clinic based in Kings Hill, Kent. We offer everything that could make you feel better about what you see in the mirror, which makes it a very satisfying job. Skincare, wrinkle treatments and body sculpting to name just a few. Our concept was all about how a smile lights up your face, and what we can do to bring that smile back.

What are your key pieces for SS15?

Where to begin?! Nobody skinny jeans are a must have for any season for me! With the UK weather being so unpredictable I tend not to buy too many summer dresses but stick to jeans and skirts with cute colourful tops, that will make me feel bright even on a rainy day.

What is your favourite piece from the bod & ted SS15 collections?

This is such a hard question! I have two probably. I bought a Zoe Karssen white t-shirt which says ‘Big Kiss’ in bright coral across the front – I love it! I also bought the Bourne Alberta dress for a wedding – it’s various shades of grey with a bit of lime green/bright yellow in the print. It’s so striking, very flattering on and I love the fact that no one will be wearing the same thing as me on the day!

What pieces are already on your wishlist for AW15?

360 Cashmere is on my list for every season. I saw your tweet when you were buying for AW15, and the beautiful fringed 360 cape that’s coming in is top of my list. A complete must have.

What are your wardrobe essentials?

Skinny jeans are an absolute essential – you can look effortlessly chic without trying too hard. A black pencil skirt is key for my work wardrobe – I also have a beautiful black leather skirt, which adds an extra edge. A little black dress is a key look for me – I love black, and have a couple of beautiful ones with a bit of a twist for an elegant evening look if I’m not feeling very imaginative.

What is your favourite part of running your own business?

There are so many positives it’s difficult to choose. I think one of the most important things for me is being able to run my business in a way I believe in – applying my own personal morals and ethics to how I treat my customers and my employees. And on a more individual level, I love having flexibility in my life – yes I work hard and do a lot of hours, but I can pick and choose when I do and don’t work which means I still have a great work/life balance.

What are your top skincare tips for summer?

The most important one of all is sunscreen – you should wear at least an SPF 30 every day in summer and winter, and if you’re out and about this should be reapplied throughout the day. This will help minimize UV damage to your skin. Just because you can’t see the damage now, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening! Adding in a high quality Vitamin C serum will also increase the effectiveness of your sunscreen by 4 times, providing antioxidant protection for your skin. To get that gorgeous dewy look to your skin which means you don’t need to cake lots of foundation on throughout the summer months, a light chemical peel and microdermabrasion treatment will remove the dead skin cells on the surface which give your skin a dull look.

Which 3 beauty products can you not live without?

Obagi Vitamin C serum – this smells amazing, and feels so smooth when applied to the skin. It’s the highest quality of Vitamin C available and provides anti-oxidant protection throughout the day. Heliocare Oilfree Gel SPF 50 – this SPF is so easily absorbed, with none of the chalkiness that many SPFs have. And it smells great too! Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder – I don’t tend to wear foundation, but love this powder as a finishing touch to my skin
Who is your fashion icon?

Audrey Hepburn is just classically elegant, and I really admire that. We have completely different body types and I wouldn’t wear the same outfits, but her sense of style was immaculate. I think Kate Hudson always looks great – in a casual pair of jeans or a red carpet dress she always looks stylish.

Thanks Sophie!
