Young Fashion Designer of the Year Award / 2016

yfd1So you may have seen this incredible piece in our window this past week…it is the work of the very talented Rachel Rose who won the much coveted Young Fashion Designer Award in July with her textured cape.

The Young Fashion Designer Awards is a national competition, established by Kent College Pembury in 2010 to celebrate talented Textiles students at GCSE, AS & A Level. Every year it’s judged by a select group of 10 judges who each bring experience and professionalism from a range of fashion, textile and design backgrounds – many of which are local Kent businesses. Since 2010, the competition has gained significant momentum with a year on year growth of entries. This year was no exception, with a record breaking 175 entries for the South region. Our very own Sophie was part of the esteemed judging panel this year, and spent a sunny Saturday back in July talking to the students and dissecting their amazing work!

yfdNow, introducing Rachel who won this year…we had a chat with her about the inspiration behind her design and what her future plans are.

“So I am nearly 19, and have studied for a BTEC in fashion this year at Hillview School for Girls which I have received a Distinction* in this morning! I am going to study Costume Design and Making at Nottingham Trent University in September”.

Rachel has also designed costumes for productions at the Oast Theatre in Tonbridge and for a production of THIS IS ART on Brick Lane during the Shakespeare in Shoreditch festival as part of the Shakespeare birthday celebrations earlier this year.

“My project brief was to create a garment for Topshop’s summer 2016 range and I decided to take inspiration from Italian Architecture after having visited Italy in 2014. I looked a lot into the shapes and patterns in the primary images I was studying and took these geometric shapes forward into my own techniques, using laser cutting and manipulation to create a laser cut cape with several different innovative techniques on out of white leatherette.”

We love supporting young talent in this country, especially in the fashion industry and we predict that Rachel Rose is definitely a name to keep an eye on!
